KLAMATH, Del Norte County — People planning a hike along the Pacific coastline near Klamath should know that the Klamath section of the California Coastal Trail is a substantial trail, not a short paved waterfront path.
Redwood National and State Parks lists the route as approximately 5.5 miles, with a northern trailhead at Wilson Creek Picnic Area along U.S. Highway 101 and a southern trailhead at the Klamath River Overlook on Requa Road. The National Park Service rates it moderate and notes that some sections contain steep grades and switchbacks.
What hikers can see
The trail passes through coastal forests of Sitka spruce and red alder, with sea stacks and offshore seabird habitats along the route. A side path near False Klamath Cove leads toward Hidden Beach and tidepools. Visitors should check tide times before exploring shoreline areas because ocean conditions can become dangerous quickly.
Restrictions and preparation
The park’s dedicated route description lists no dogs, bicycles or horses on the Klamath trail section. Hikers should bring water, appropriate footwear and weather protection, and consider how they will return to their starting point. Trailhead parking and road access can be limited.
Storm damage, fallen trees and seasonal closures can change access. Before departing, check the park’s current conditions page rather than assuming that a trail mentioned in a guide is open today.
