KLAMATH, Del Norte County — November marks the start of a prime season to look for migrating gray whales along the northern California coastline, including at the Klamath River Overlook above the Pacific Ocean.
Redwood National and State Parks identifies November through December and March through April as peak migration periods. The National Park Service says a population of whales may also be seen year-round from the Klamath River Overlook. None of these seasonal patterns guarantees a sighting on any given day.
Where to go
The overlook is reached via Requa Road north of Klamath. It provides views of the Klamath River meeting the Pacific Ocean and is also known for seabirds, seals and dramatic coastal scenery. The park identifies it as a good place to watch for whale spouts, especially on clear, calm days. Binoculars help visitors observe wildlife without approaching it.
Access and road precautions
The National Park Service warns that Requa Road is steep and narrow and does not recommend larger recreational vehicles or trailers. Parking is limited. Visitors should check road and park conditions, stay in designated areas and keep a safe distance from cliffs. Coastal fog and wind can affect visibility and comfort even when inland weather is clear.
For residents, the seasonal migration is an opportunity to explore the nearby coast and learn about an ecosystem shaped by the river and ocean. The overlook is also significant to the Yurok people; visitors should respect cultural interpretation and posted rules.
